Still looking for a fresh new costume for All Hallows' Eve? Need something hot, relevant, and on-the-nose this Halloween? Well, look no further! Highbrow-Lowbrow has cultivated an exclusive list of the hottest costume ideas for 2021.
1. Ted Lasso - A Soccer Coach with a Lasso
I have to admit that I still haven't watched Ted Lasso, but hot damn is it popular right now. The Apple original has lassoed in 7 Emmy's and garnered a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes in its first season. So you know this costume will be certified fresh!
The costume is simple. You'll need a track jacket, pants, a visor, a mustache, sunglasses, and a whistle. Oh and a lasso. Once again, I haven't seen the show yet, but I assume Jason Sudeikis's character lassos... soccer balls? Not totally sure, but the lasso's still a must.
2. Squid Game - A Squid with a Board Game
Squid Game needs no introduction. If you haven't at least heard of it, you probably live under a rock. It's a global hit, and we all know that costumes from this show will dominate the Halloween scene this year. Most people will chose to don the iconic pink jumpsuit and pick their favorite shape as the Squid Game guards.
But don't be a square, circle, or triangle masked lame-o this Halloween. Instead, take a fun spin on the instant classic and dress up as a squid holding your favorite board game. Yahtzee! Bingo! Sorry (not sorry)! Now you're lookin fresh and original.
3. Bridgerton - A Bridge
I would be remiss if I were to exclude a costume from the Bridgerton craze that swept the nation this past winter. Based on the romance book series, the Netflix show broke streaming records and the hearts of millions.
While I never quite finished the series (or started it), the story boils down to an early 1800's period piece where young rich people fall in love on bridges. That's why you should be a bridge this Halloween. It's hot, it's fresh, it's infrastructure.
4. Dune - A Sandworm
Move over Timothée Chalamet, we all know who the true star of the sci-fi epic Dune is - the giant sandworms! These ferocious freaks are bound to be a hit at your upcoming Monster Mash. There are plenty of great costumes online, but don't be afraid to dune-it-yourself.
And if you're trying to SPICE up your Halloween costume add a miniskirt, banana hammock, or lowcut top to the outfit for a sexy sandworm costume.
5. I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson - Dan Flashes Shirt Guy or Karl Havoc
Tim Robinson's hilariously awkward sketch show, I Think You Should Leave, was a breath of fresh air in 2021. The off-the-wall sketches will have you crying in laughter, mildly uncomfortable, or both!
Why not honor this Netflix gem by portraying two of Season 2's most outrageous characters: Dan Flashes Shirt Guy or Karl Havoc. Both characters are dynamite. In the Dan Flashes sketch, Tim Robinson's character vehemently defends his decision to blow all his per diem work money on expensive shirts with complicated patterns. This costume is as low maintenance as low maintenance gets, but don't cheap out on the shirt. Karl Havoc is a hilarious satire on prank videos. Robinson's character dresses in an obviously fake, slightly terrifying disguise as Karl Havoc. But before Karl Havoc can prank unsuspecting mall goers, he breaks down into an existential crisis that makes for a side-splittingly dark twist. The costume's a bit complicated, but it will be well worth the effort!
6. Young Rock - A Rock
Did you know that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson got his own tv show this year? Yeah, me neither (until I Googled it). What's even more surprising is that it's gotten decent reviews. Google tells me that the family comedy depicts young Rock's trials and tribulations as he comes to age and rises to stardom.
The costume should be a rock - preferably sedimentary, but igneous or metamorphic works, too. Add a gold chain to really solidify the Young Rock look. And if anyone asks, tell them you're only 1 or 2 million years old. That's pretty young for a rock, some can date back to 3 billion years! (#RockFacts)
7. Bennifer - Hennifer Lopez and Smoking Ben Affleck
What has been the most significant event/show/movie/phenomenon of 2021? It has to be the joyous reunion of the power couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, aka Bennifer. Bennifer has been in the limelight for decades and their will-they, won't-they relationship has rocked the tabloid community. They're practically the real life Ross and Rachel!
This costume could come in various forms. While it's an easy couples costume, it still offers the possibility for the costumer to go solo. Afterall, our spin on Bennifer utilizes the best versions of the couple. We recommend dressing as South Park's popular reimaging of J.Lo, Hennifer Lopez, the sexy Latina hand puppet crafted by Eric Cartman.
